Borne botulism is no longer commonly seen people in the U.S. Nonetheless, it is seen in water fowl and occasional outbreaks are seen in domestic animals. The neurotoxin is one of the most dangerous poisons known. Probably 10, 000 50, 000 wild waterfowl die due to botulism annually in the U.S. Large outbreaks in the Western States may have loss of over a million birds. Typically, the first thing catching the community's attention is a sudden die-off of wild ducks. Sporadic episodes of botulism occur in wild waterfowl in the county, usually around lakes and marshes where there is relatively shallow water with decaying vegetation from fluctuating shore lines. Affected birds exhibit flaccid paralysis of the neck, which gives rise to the layman's term of "limberneck" for botulism. In affected waterfowl, neck paralysis can lead to drowning. Most infected waterfowl are ducks. With birds, supportive therapy and antitoxin is usually not practical. In waterfowl die-offs, stabilizing water levels, particularly in shallow waters is a major method in preventing additional deaths. Collection and disposal of dead birds is also important to help limit an outbreak. Maggots feeding on carcasses concentrate the toxin. Ducks that consume toxin-laden maggots can develop botulism after eating as few as 3 or maggots. Outbreak of botulism in horses due to contaminated hay The last outbreak of botulism in domestic animals in the county was diagnosed in 1989. The outbreak extended to five California counties, affecting 45 horses. Initially, the press reported the outbreak was due to a mystery disease. Contaminated alfalfa hay cubes shipped to California from Utah were the source of the food borne outbreak in local horses. The hay had been contaminated during the bailing process, when dead rodents were caught in the food. The decaying rodents supplied the toxin. Several thousand tons of the livestock feed was removed from the market. Clinical signs were weakness and paralysis, and some horses were unable to stand. Several horses at one stable died within a week of consuming the contaminated hay. Many horse owners elected not to administer heroic treatments due to costs and the poor prognosis, because use of combivent. WHO KILLED OFFICER GARY DAVIS? Summary Joshua Campbell killed Officer Gary Davis at 2: 45 A.M. on May 13, 2004, by broadsiding him while driving at an excessive speed, because he was legally drunk, and not in control of his car. Joshua Campbell was tried for second degree murder and manslaughter. In October, 2005, the jury acquitted Mr. Campbell of all felony charges because the evidence presented at the trial showed that negligent driving by Officer Gary Davis contributed to the accident. Officer Gary Davis was bipolar manic-depressive ; , and this paper will strongly suggest that the bipolar illness was responsible for the actions of Officer Davis that led to his death. Who was responsible for placing Officer Gary Davis alone in the police car? The prosecutor wanted to put Joshua Campbell in prison for the rest of his life. I recommended that the Bloomfield Township Chief of Police Jeffrey Werner be replaced because as the chief of a small police department he should be held accountable for the job assignment of Officer Davis. I present my analysis of the case, and make recommendations in order to try to prevent a repeat of this tragic event. Joshua Campbell, the 21 year old drunk driver who killed Officer Gary Davis, was convicted of drunk driving at the age of seventeen, and had four moving violations prior to the above accident. Society should be blamed for allowing Joshua Campbell to drive without the proper safeguards for the public. I recommend that all drunk drivers be sentenced to mandatory long term use of Antabuse, a drug that deters alcohol consumption by causing the drinker to become ill in order to prevent them from drinking and driving. A year following the death of Officer Davis the Bloomfield Township police arrested the wife of the CEO of the Chrysler Corporation for serving over 100 minors alcohol in her home. Chief Jeffrey Werner took minimal action against her by taking her to District Court instead of the Oakland County Circuit Court where the penalty for her offense was stiffer. The good citizens of Bloomfield Township were outraged by what happened and forced the board of trustees to change the Township's ordinance to conform to the penalties that can be imposed by the circuit court, which include jail time. Joshua Campbell's fatal collision with Officer Davis was underway when he was served alcohol and convicted of drunk driving at the age of seventeen. In the name of Officer Gary Davis the good citizens of Bloomfield Township should demanded that Chief Jeffrey Werner be replaced. Legislation in the name of Officer Gary Davis mandating the use of Antabuse as I have proposed would be a fitting and meaningful memorial for him. Who Kill Officer Gary Davis? We did. We as a society did not control the drinking and driving of Joshua Campbell. We as a society did not control the Bloomfield Township Police Department, which resulted in the inappropriate job placement of a police officer and his death. Main Article What you are about to read is dedicated to the memory of Officer Gary Davis, and is written with the goal of preventing a repeat of the tragic death that befell Officer Gary Davis. I writing this paper based on facts that I have obtained from the news media, the autopsy report on Officer Gary Davis that was available through the Freedom of Information Act, and talking to officials of Bloomfield Township, Michigan, where Officer Gary Davis was employed. I will be the first to admit that I do not know all of the facts concerning this case. The officials of Bloomfield. What is your strategy for transforming Schering-Plough and achieving long-term growth? We have laid out our five-stage Action Agenda of Stabilize, Repair, Turnaround, Build the Base and Breakout. Our long-term strategy is on track to deliver on this agenda. We are focusing on three basics: people, products and processes. It all starts with the people. You have to have very strong people who are competent at what they do, who understand the Company's direction, who work well as a team and who move together in the same direction. You need a flow of very good, innovative treatments that address important unmet medical needs. This is the essence of our business. For the medicines you already have, you've got to do more with them. For the future treatments in the R&D pipeline, you need to bring them into the marketplace. And then there are good innovations that you get externally through licensing and deals. So with this three-pronged approach marketed products, internal R&D and external innovation you can maximize and grow your array of treatments. Also, processes are extremely important because that's how work gets done efficiently and correctly. Pharmaceutical companies have conventionally worked in relatively self-contained units, or silos. For example, R&D did not always have much to do with the commercial side, and manufacturing was its own silo. But this is not the way to get the best results. What gets the best results are cross-functional processes. Cross-functional work demands more of everyone, but the results are superior. So we are building a new culture in our Company that is committed to cross-functional work. What about costs and cost reduction? We are making the new Company into a lean and costconscious operation. We have launched a Value Enhancement Initiative VEI ; that is targeted to save more than $200 million in annual, ongoing costs. Much of these savings will be reinvested to drive growth for example, into sales force expansion and support of our new products. We are using this initiative not only to achieve savings, but also to re-engineer every aspect of what we are doing so that we deliver executional excellence. Government. Combivent use in childrenResearch is needed on the development of preventative "systems" approaches to health management in aquaculture. Systems approaches would help to reduce the likelihood of disease outbreaks through preventative approaches in aquatic animal health care. Such approaches are particularly relevant to the countries surveyed for this paper, as aquaculture is still relatively under-developed and extensive in these countries.
